Why DO You Believe That?

I used to think I knew what my friends believe.

But then, everything became so polarized (or was it already and we just didn’t know it?). And certain conspiracy theories seemed to infect even some of my more thoughtful friends.

It’s not like I ever doubted my grasp of reality. Although I began to question their’s.

Can you relate?

Regardless of what you believe, do you have more people in your life today who seem to have taken a leave of their senses? Who now believe things you thought they would never believe?

If so, you aren’t alone. And it doesn’t matter what “side” you are on. We are all coming to terms with the gaps between our various takes on the truth. And it can be both disturbing and alienating.

But what if we take a broader view of things instead of getting mired in the specifics of our discrepant beliefs?

What if we slow down and look at how we come to believe what we believe?

I dug into some research and found more than a few fascinating facts (can we still use that word?) about how people form their concept of what is true.

It is my hope that by looking into the how of belief, we might be able to find more room to love each other even when we disagree.

If you are experiencing painful disconnects with those you love, you might find my article helpful or at least entertaining.

And however my perspective lands for you, I would love to know how you are dealing with others who see things differently than you do.
